'92 Volvo 240 having problems shifting into 3rd and 4th, but not all the time

I've got a 1992 240 that's been acting a bit odd lately. if I take it out for a drive, stop driving it for a while (30 minutes to 2 hours, it seems), and then drive it again, it has problems going from 2nd to 3rd and oftentimes won't go into 4th at all. I've driven it to and from work every day for the past two weeks, though, and didn't notice the problem once. it's only if I drive, stop and then drive again a short time later. I've read posts about the kickdown cable and fuses, but those seem to only apply to problems going from 3rd to 4th, so I wasn't sure they applied in my case. I'm hoping the oddly intermitent nature of it will give somebody a clue as to what is going on. my trusty volvo tech wasn't able to find a problem, so he suggested replacing the transmission but (as you can imagine) I'm a little loathe to do that if I don't have to. thanks!

Is the gearbox an AW91 ? Three speed with overdrive ? (button on the left side of the lever and "1,2 D" shown on the side of the lever, together with "P","N" and "R".) or is it a ZF4something ? (no button on the lever, but "1,2,3,4" on side of the lever, well "P", "N" and "R" is also shown there) In the AW-case an oilchange might cure your problem, but if you have a ZF it's probably worn out. (well, it can be overhauled, but the cost is unacceptable.....in most cases.)

It would be an AW71, the 200 series never got the ZF box, that was 700 series only.

it has the 1,2 D with the button on the left side to downshift. I had an oil change after this started happening and it didn't fix the problem.
