940 Starter Noises and Replacement

I have a 1994 945TG (940 Wagon, Turbo) with about 110K miles on it. Recently, immediately upon starting, there has been a grinding noise that comes from the engine compartment area. The noise lasts for a few seconds, and only appears during startup.

My thought is that the starter is beginning to fail, probably due to a hanging return spring. I would like to replace it before it fails completely and leaves us stranded. Has anyone replaced their starter on a 940 turbo engine, and is it something a typical weekend mechanic can do with regular tools? Also, is there any recommendation on a replacement part - either from Volvo or an aftermarket source?

You need a long extension and a universal joint to get at the top bolt easily (from underneath). Otherwise it's pretty easy. Just make sure you disconnect the battery!

And remember your radio code before you disconnect.

Cheers, Peter.
