940 strange noises...

I have a 940 Auto non-turbo 1998cc '91. There is a strange noise coming from what seems to be the front offside ( in the UK that's the right). When idle, no noise, but when moving it's a clicking at fixed intervals, regardless of road speed... any ideas? ( New brake pads & disks in last April for MOT, no probs..)

do you have abs brakes? can you "feel" the clicks in the steering wheel...or, do you just hear the clicks?

It has ABS and if the Windows are closed you can't hear a thing... Nothing seems to come through the steering wheel

check fan switches, or some sort of electrical clicking...if no noise when parked...but clicking upon moving...but no change in clicking when speed varies...sounds weird indeed!!...maybe have a friend slowly drive the car, whith hood open...and see if you see or hear while walking along side...watching your toes of course.. ..... then, if "no joy" into the shop or dealer for analysis i would recomend...

Perhaps there's somewhere near you where you can put the car on a dyno? You can't work on it that way but you may be able to pinpoint the source of the sound.

Just a thought. blurp

My father's car had a similar click-click noise when driving slowly. Not when stopped. Nor at speed - although he swore he still heard it over the din of the engine/tire.etc noises.

After much frustration it turns out a rock had become trapped between the steel wheel and the hubcap, and bounced around when moving creating the click-click noise from his wheel. After "I" removed the rock, the noise stopped.

It may not be same in your case, but it might be worth a quick look.

Good luck.

a dyno would be good...as it has to be something in the drive line...or tranny...although, one would think if this was the case, the noise would vary w/speed or rmp's of the drive line..??

make sure you let us know what it ends up being...a dyno may save the toes......but, it will cost $$.....

yep...good point...i had a pebble get trapped in the hub cap one day...and make wierd noises...funny clicks...but, the noise did correlate w/movement and speed of the car.....its cheap and worth a look!!
