960 Alarm/Immobiliser

Good Afternoon, I have recently purchased a 1996 960 Saloon 3 litre 24v. (UK Specifications) I would like advice on how do I know if the alarm/immobiliser is working (or even fitted), as the little red led light does not seem to flash at all when the car is locked up. (There is no Remote Control Locking Spec on this model). ( I also do not even know if it is an Alarm or Immobiliser or both!)

Any advice and help would be most useful from members of this group, as the Owners Handbook, and other sources, (inc Volvo) do not provide any help.

Thank you

Mathew

Mine (945 2.3 16v '91) also has a little red LED light. It even has an alarm connected up to it. But ultrasonic stuff isn't hooked up and there is no remote control unit either.

Have you had a chance to look at the Volvo Vadis (Volvo aftersales dealer information service) DVD yet? I myself haven't had a chance, but hope to soon.

If you go to this webpage you will be able to download the manual for VolvoGuard Alarm. This system does have an immobiliser function but is not as advanced as the Volvo Immobiliser.

There has been at least 3 different types of alarms on the 960 for European market, so first you would have to identify which type you migth have. If you have had a look at the link Peter Milnes provided, you will see how the status panel looked like on the early Volvoguard. If you dont have the panel, but only a small diode mounted in the loudspeaker grill, you probably have a volvoguard version 2.1 or 2.2. The diode should flash briefly every second, when activated. If the alarm is installed there will be a pushswitch at the left hand hood catch, something similar to the ones in the doors. I would think you could test the alarm by holding the hood switch close by hand, activate the alarm by the remote and then release the hood switch. If it goes of it may be the diode is faulty.

Maybe you don't have an alarm at all but just the immobiliser. The real volvo immobiliser has a transponder in the keys, so they are a bit bigger than other volvo keys. I don't know exactly how to describe the difference, but the one with transponders doesn't feel like the handle is solid plastic.
