98 S-70 GLT; ABS & Traction control lights come off and on.....

My 98 Volvo S-70 GLT, has a problem with the ABS and Traction contol system, turning on and off lights. When it either turns on or off, I can hear the noise of the abs motor and feel the brake pedal pulsate, when it makes this noise. I understand that their is an epidemic problem with the ABS computer, that cost around 600.00. I don't have 600.00 now for that computer. I wonder why it keeps turning off and on. It sounds as if it has a loose connection or maybe a loose solder connection. Has anyone out there had similar problems, sure would like to hear how you have repair you car. I dont want to get a used one from the salvage yard im afraid I will get one with the same problem. I appreciate any comments from anyone who can assist..Thanks Robie

The problem you discussed is very common and very expensive. The problem is caused by a broken solder joint. You could try to dissassemble the module and repair it but I doubt the repair you last very long. Just know that the ABS and /or Tracs may not work when you really need it.

There is another possibility . . .

Starting with the Right Rear wiring (the usual culprit, as I recall), check connection and condition on wiring in the motion sensing system. This is the system that reports the rate of rotation to the on board computer and to the dread ABS Control Module. An interrupted circuit (usually intermittent) in this system may report that a wheel has a differing (usually slower) speed when the brakes are applied - thus operating the ABS process.

Since just dirt is enough to cause problems here, it's surely worth the effort. My friendly Dealer comments that their perpetual fears of subsequent litigation virtually force them to replace the Module, even when such an on/off problem is the clear choice for cause. Ain't lawyers wonderful?!
