disengage gears got mind of their own

Just to try you guys in the know with another question. My 940 automatic has a button on the stick which will disengage low gear I( think )to make it run in 3 gears(I am no expert on this), Every now and again this seems to happen without me doing anything, just driving along. Once I slow down a gear I can use the button to turn the light off and off we go again. It can be a little reluctant to alter and seems to do it out of the blue. Am I in trouble and is this going to cost loads. Clare

The relay needs to be resoldered, or you can just replace it if you don't know anyone who can solder. It costs about $50.

On most 940s, this button serves to disengage overdrive. However, it was an option (if you ordered through European Delivery, as I did) to have the air suspension, the engine gearing, the brake response, and the turbocharger reconfigured into a sort of sport mode through this button, sort of like the S button found on many newer models. This is what I did -- we essentially use the same button, but different functions. To find out which you have, simply start the car, get out, and push the button while carefully noticing the clearance of the car. If it seems to drop, you have the second option. If there is no noticable change, you have the first.

This button can be quite sensitive. I learned very quickly not to rest my hand on the shifter -- it seems to just feel the touch and activate. Replacements, I have found, are exactly the same.

By the way, Clare, have you gotten the problem fixed where the car shuts off intermittentally?
