door won't open

Ok, I just spent $2600 getting my 98 S 70 back up and running. Burned valv e replaced, new belts, tune up, etc. and the 3 days later I hear this popp ing when I open my drivers side door. It seemed to be coming from that bra ss colored latch between the door and the body that keeps the door from sla mming back shut when it's opened. Today, ironically, I'd just gone to pay my car insurance and when I returned to the car the door wouldn't unlock or open. I had to go to the passenger side and crawl across to the drivers s ide and at 6'5" tall that's no small feat. I've read a couple of things on what the problem could be and those say I'll need to remove the seat in or der to get to the panel to remove it and then fix the problem. Is this tru e? Any thoughts on what it would cost for a shop to fix this? I'm in the US. Frustrating as I spent most of my year end vacation waiting for my car to be fixed only to have this happen now that it's time to go back to work ..

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
