Downside(s) of using 87 octane rather than 91?

Can someone explain clearly what the disadvantage(s) is/are for using 87 octane rather than 91 octane in an S60? Is octane a more important consideration if you have a turbo? More important for HPT than LPT?

Because the engine will retard the timing with 87 ocatane, reducing power, and possibly increasing fuel consumption. If you can afford a S60, you can afford the premium fuel.... It's not like they are bad on gas.

Performance and mileage suffer using 87 octane. The car will run, but not as well.

The difference in performance is significant - the improvement in mileage makes the price difference not so great....!

You MAY also get an increase in carbon build up. Running one in three is often recommended as is giving your motor a decent hard run from time to time.
