Engine Servuce Light

For a time when I started my 1990 240 the engine service light came on , and went out. now it seems to stay out again..

not the oil light, or the charging light , a yellow one.

I think I heard that this is to remind you to change the timing belt. but just how it works exactly I am not sure.

was there a trick to resetting it or something? I remember hearing something about it but my memory fails me.

No, this is not to change your timing belt. You know it comes on very 5000 miles, right? It means your Volvo's due for its routine service -- you know, oil change, oil filter, check the air filter, clean the PCV valve -- that sort of thing. You wouldn't be changing your timing belt every 5000 miles :-)

This varies from model to model. But if I were you, I would do the service it needs, and then reset it.

On the back of the speedometer there is a lever that pulls up or down (I forget which) to reset the service light. On later ones (maybe yours) there is a cable to a button to push on one of the lower corners of the speedometer face, similar to the trip meter reset.
