Found a broken wire in tailgate hinge !!!!!!

Finally, something obvious !!!! In the driver's side tailgate hinge of my 1989 245 there is a solid black wire and what appears to be a small bundle of wires passing through. The solid black wire is completely severed and I noticed that the high level brake light flickers sometimes when the tailgate is being opened and closed. What does the solid black wire go to and how should I approach the flickering high level brake light? How do I take the tailgate off and apart if that is what's needed?

I love this group almost as much as I love my Volvo!

This is probably the single most common problem that occurs on 240 wagons. To fix it, remove the rear dome light and handle, pull the rear edge of the headliner off the lip, then mark the position of the hinges with a dry erase marker and while two helpers hold the hatch, remove the gas shocks and then remove the two bolts from each side that hold the hinges to the roof. Set the tailgate on a padded surface and remove the hinges and upholstery panel. You should be able to pull the new wiring harnesses (available online) in with the old ones.

What you found is a broken ground wire the hinge is held on by 4 bolts or 3 bolts & a screw support the tailgate then remove the headliner just to gain access to the mounting hardware then do the same on the tailgate remove the mounting hardware you can attempt to repair the broken ground or you can just replace the hinge if you opt for replacement try your local Volvo dealer or IPD to see which has the better price Glenn
