Who has said that the headgasket is gone? I think others will say same as I that it's unlikely? What do you mean by losing coolant from the res? If a rad or waterpump is leaking the level will eventually drop down from the resevoir because it naturally is drawn in if level drops in rad. If level is dropping in it look to waterpump? and hoses, and Rad first.

I have other problems which may be the head gasket which I have posted on this group.

Before we take the head off I need to be 100% it is the head gasket so hence my question that if I have no external leaks on the cooling system and lose no water from the reservoir then it cannot be the head gasket or could it.

It could, or it could be any number of other things. Have you pressurized the cooling system with the engine cold to see if you have any leaks? A small leak will often leak slowly enough that with a hot engine nothing noticeable comes out.

Do a compression check, is there oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil - foamy? Is there coolant coming out of the exhaust ? Extreme back pressure and or bubbling from the expansion tank. Pull the plugs - does one look strangley clean or does it have a sweet smell ? How many miles ? Generally after

200-250K miles the gasket will develop little leaks, however it may not be enough to cause any problems. Need to know more about your problems first. Just replaced mine a few weeks ago - pretty easy work, once you have the head machined and checked for cracks.
