Hi Les. Since I'm the author of the article you referenced, I can say I told you so. I honestly do not know the consequences, but you may have to remove the bottom pulley (vibration damper) to extract the nut and washer. If you're lucky, it's in the oil pan where it should do no harm, but I'm not too certain of this.
Here's a stroke of genius - use a strong magnet that may catch the loose parts through the plastic should and work them to the opening (where you should have stuffed a rag). Sorry, but good luck... Cam

Yes, the "I told you so" is well deserved. I'm going to try one of those little magnetic probes when the shops open tomorrow. I followed your advice first time, but had a leak at the top head seal, so stripped it all down again and relied on the nut staying in the socket as it did first time. I've heard that someone cut a hole in the bottom cover and got it out that way...
Bugger.......
Oh well.... got the whole day to do it, not the end of the world. But i havn't got the tools to remove the cam pulley. No socket large enough, no tool to hold the settings in place while i do it either.
