I can reset your V70, S70, S40, V40, 850, service light. (UK)

Hi all. After much consideration, I have purchased an Electronic tool for resetting Volvo Service reminder lights. The unit plugs into the OBDII Diagnostic socket under the armrest, and after pressing a switch, whoosh, no service light when you turn the ignition on. Many will argue that it's easy to remove the bulb for the service reminder light, but according to my haynes manual, the ECU actually measures various conditions to decide when the vehicle needs servicing. To me, this is a useful function. So, if you want your light resetting, bring the car to Cambridgeshire, and I'll do it for you. There is a method of using the odometer trip button to reset this light, but I, amongst others have found that this doesn't work on later 850 models, and the S/V cars. I can also source these units if anyone wants to pay the £50 cost. I am located in Peterborough, but travel around a bit for work, so can possibly help those who live further away. Together we'll wipe out the need for main dealers! Cheers for now. Joe. Peterborough UK. V70 TDI 229,000 miles.

Not sure exactly what he means but I don't fancy trying it on my car! There's some complicated electronics within the reset tool, and you get a whole sequence of flashing lights on the tool when you perform the reset. Perhaps it's just a relay with light-sequencer circuit!

Hmmmm. Looks superb, and so does the price. I wish I knew this a couple of weeks ago! This unit really will give the main dealer the shivers. Not sure it'll allow me to change the cambelt on my diesel though. Can it be used to set up timing?

Odometer reset really doesn't work on my car though, just like lots of others have reported. Anyone know the reason for this yet? Cheers for now. Joe Landy Peterborough UK.

The odometer reset method of resetting the service light will only work on '99 model year cars. (about Sept '98 on) On petrol models these can be identified by the fact they are 'fly by wire' and have an ETS (Electronic Throttle Module) warning light on the dash. Not sure about diesel versions.

Cambelt timing on diesels needs the Volvo Scan Tool, the Vol-FCR software is only designed to be a fault code reader.

A Volvo scan tool only costs about 3500 UKP!

However I understand the early 850/S/V70 diesel engine is based on an Audi unit and uses an VAG ECU in which case a VAG scan tool should work.

VAG scan tool is available at:

9 pin serial leads for VAG-COM will also work the Vol-FCR software.

Hope this helps

Has anyone actually tried resetting the Service Light on any 1995 850's? If so was it successful?
