Looking for a new XC 70

Hello group,

Been doing allot of reading in the group these past few weeks regarding the V70 XC and the XC70. We're looking to buy a used model, and need the boosters and third row.

My questions are these, which year is best to get, between 2000 and

2005? Are miles a big issue, as in, high miles if the car was maintained well? Do these cars have any specific issues to look out for? I know they changed the AWD system in '01 or '02, but that's about it. Is an 80k mi car a time bomb? What's maintenence like over 100k?

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions that probably have been answered before...

The value of the older Volvos stays high because they run forever if maintained properly. Your results will depend upon how well they were maintained before you bought them.

The best years for the V70 are '99-00, '03 (the 1999 & 2000 V70 are VERY reliable)

The worst years for the V70 are '01 and '02. Mine is a '01 and I have had no problems now with it at 100K miles. I plan on keeping it another

80K miles.

The best and worst monickers are statistical and all are fairly good. Some are just better than others.

Look at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 cars.

Sure miles are an issue. That's why cars with high miles go for less than cars with low miles. You are paying for an expected service life and if the car has been used less there is more of that service life left.

It (and other cars) are a time bomb if scheduled maintainence hasn't been kept up including replacement of all fluids. I would strongly suggest that you review the maintenance records for the car and that you have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a good Volvo mechanic.

About like it is under 100k. Just keep up with the defined schedule and you should be fine IF the car is in good condition to begin with. Parts will eventually break on any car, so you just have to keep up with them.

Thanks for the advice, I tend to agree with all posted, and have found a great resource at

Thanks again,
