OEM ABS control unit or Aftermarket ABS control unit?

While down at the dealer I was talking to the parts manager (a friend of mine from the old days), that said that ABS control unit replacement is quite common on volvos, and the service advisor when told my codes said ABS control unit.

So Im wondering if there is an aftermarket control unit, or are they all from the dealers?

I junked my 740 Turbo after the A/C and ABS crapped out. Too costly for repairs.

Usually Bosch make ABS controllers and pump units. Quite a few pump units (for ABS) were made in the USA.

Cheers, Peter.

Okay, found one on kragen.com

Cardone 121425 Remanufactured; w/o Traction Control Lifetime Limited Warranty

Since it has a lifetime warranty, it seems a better way to go than the dealer with a 12/12 warranty. And it costs less than the dealer, but still a whopping $299.00 plus a $50.00 core charge. Still better than the dealer prices, even at my cost which is cost plus 10%.

Can't you drive without ABS??? I drove more than 15 years without ABS, they were not invented nor available on my Volvos. I removed the fuse for the ABS in the 2 Volvos I'm driving and drive very well without it.

I prefer no ABS, better control on roads with sands and small rocks. Stupid ABS can't make up their mind and add 10-30 feet to stop the car. Almost had an accident on two occasions because ABS took a longer distance to stop.

Just my 2 cents.

ABS is not meant to stop you in a shorter distance than without it. It is designed to enable you to have directional control over your vehicle whilst braking heavily. Braking heavily often causes complete loss of directional control. Have you not seen the Ford advert involving a Moose?

Cheers, Peter.

ABS is designed to stop the wheels from locking. If they *do* lock, not only will you have no directional control, but stopping distances will be

*increased*.

In most circumstances, ABS will stop you in a shorter distance than you'll get if you keep the brake pedal pressed hard down and lock the wheels. However, if you have sufficient skill to apply cadence braking properly, you can stop in an even shorter distance *without* ABS. Like someone else said, there are sometimes circumstances where ABS is fooled into letting go of the brakes when it shouldn't.

All in all though, give me ABS every time!

Yeah I could, and do, still havnt gotten around to getting a new ABS module, it's just the anoying light on the dash that bothers me, but ABS is good in my book, I had a guy stop short in front of me on friday morning, and the ABS kicked in and prevented me from locking up the brakes and allowed me to maintain of the steering while doing so.

replacement
