used v70 2.5d year 2000 170.000km question

Hi all, I have test-driven the above car in view of a purchase and I am left puzzled by engine behaviour. I?m told by the Volvo dealer that it has an Audi engine. It has to be said that I have never driven a Volvo before, let alone such a big diesel engine. The strange thing to me is that while accelerating from a still to about 70km/h the engine kind of vibrates and appears to struggle and then a much cleaner and rounder/smoother response to gas pedal arrives (turbo coming in?)... The dealer syas it is perfectly normal for an old generation diesel like this one to require some warmup before riding smoothly and that the car is healthy. Sounds reasonable, but I test driven other used diesel cars from other manufacturers (VW, Audi) and they were much smoother without any warmup. Since my motor knowledge is very poor and I?ve just arrived in this area and I don?t know anybody here skilled enough to test the car for me, I would like to ask you if the behaviour I described earlier sounds familiar to you. Otherwise the car is clean and shiny: deep blue outside with beige interiors, very nice. The dealer (a proper Volvo dealer, in Italy) is asking 13000 euros for the car.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

VE

I bought in German two mounts ago V70 with the same engine but 12'99 (model

2000) with navi, lether, automatic gearbox for 6500Euro. look at mobile.de and autoscout24.de to compare prices. Look at this one for example

Hi,

The engine behavior that you descibe is not normal!!

It is correct that the engine is an audi engine type 2.5 TDI AEL you find it in Audi A6 from 1994 to 1997 - Volvo used this engine until for few years ago. The engine is strong and will last for many kilometers. Driving the car you will hear a light diesel sound until about 1800 rpms and then the car sounds like a normal car to drive. Under heavy accelleration you will hear more noise of cause but there should be no vibrations to feel.

Best regards Per
