V40 2.0T Manual Alternator replacement - is it a DIY job???

Following an AA recovery, just been informed that my alternator is most likely on the way out.

It's only giving 13.3V at the battery when the engine's running - quick call to my brother (a trusted technician!) confirms that this is probably a good diagnosis.

So, my choice is whether to part with desperately scarce cash and get my garage to replace it (which I will do if the job is definitely not straightforward), or whether this is something that I can reasonably DIY and replace it myself.

Anyone done this? Does it need diagnostics/ECU tweaks afterwards? I'm in the UK, by the way....

It appears unlikely there are any ECU issues with an R&R of the alternator, just pull the bad one and place the good one. I'm not an expert but have been down this road with my tech and don't recall ECU issues nor do any seem likely. You might wait for more input but my money is on a clean r&r

Further development probably makes the original question redundant now... I found out the cost of the replacement alternator - a whopping £390 inc sales taxes. This makes the fitting cost of about £70 from the garage almost reasonable, and further investigations have revealed that a number of ancillary components would need to come off. I decided that the incremental cost of getting the garage to fit it was probably worth it for the peace of mind!

I stupidly let my other car run the battery flat in storage a couple of times which might have knackered the battery, and as I'm not confident that I'd have a reliable alternative I decided to go with the quickest fix.

thanks, though. It's always good to know about the procedure that the technicians will have to follow so that I have a fighting chance of knowing if they haven't done something to spec.
