Volvo 760

We have a Volvo 760 V6 GLE Auto which we have had fixed for a major oil leak from the cam cover. The Car runs ok now, but there seems to be a problem with the cooling system, firstly coolant seems to leak oil and the oil pressure guide is toally knackered and is always at red. Any ideas what the problem migh be, could it be the head gaskets? Are we in danger of blowing the head gaskets?

There is also a faint smell that I cannot put my finger on. I am not sure if this is the oil smell in the car (the engine was literally covered in oil but is cleaner now). Could this be the smell or is it something else.

The AC does'nt work - can we just cut the belt, since its costing fuel.

I am an utter novice so please be careful with me.

Thanks

Check radiator for leaks between oil and coolant parts. You will probably find that the oil and coolant are no longer separated. Get this looked at pronto as you will need to flush refill the tranny, fit new radiator and flush/refill coolant before the tranny buys it. If the oil pressure is electrically sensed then the sensor is probably knackered. Don't cut the belt just disconnect the electrical connection at the pump. This will prevent the clutch from operating and remove the drag from the drive belt.

All the best, Peter.

If the A/C doesn't work the compressor clutch won't engage so you can just leave the belt there, it won't use any fuel.

Is the oil pressure low or is the guage broken? Often the wire will fall off the sensor.

Hello,

Yes, cut the belt to the Aircon Compressor, I havn't found a 760 that the aircon works on yet!!!

The V6 engine is a PRV-V6 found in the Peugot 506, DMC Delorean, and many other cars. It is a 90 degree V6 and as I remember if you have the B280E you have a lot of useable power, if you have the B280F - You have a catalytic converter that sucks all the power away (Remove it).

The V6 has wet liners that are prone to leaking, it's also a very cool running engine, therefor, finding water in the oil is fairly normal, there is usually 'white goo' on the bottom of the oil filler cap, even in a normal engine.

If you have water in the oil it is also possible that the oil cooler in the main radiator has ruptured.

I don't know if this information will be of any use, it's just what I picked up from owning a 760 for 4 years.

The funny smell is probably the exhaust manifolds leaking, they are prone to pinholes and you may notice a slight 'chuffing' sound when stood next to the engine at idle.

To check the headgaskets, remove the spark plugs and check the condition, they are a good indicator in this engine of it's condition. If they are all gooey or very clean and burned white, then you probably have a gasket leak.
