Volvo computer works backwards!!!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience with the Volvo on board computer?

It appears that the petrol flow sensor is fitted backwards, but I can not locate it on the car, basically, when on tick over the car reads that it is doing 11.1 miles to the gallon, and if it is driven it real hard, it can get up into the 50 to the gallon area. The trouble is, my Fiancée believes this is correct, and drives everywhere flat out.

The car is a Volvo 480ES. Please don't sent me packing to the Register, I don't want to join them.

Thanks

Clive

It's not connected backwards - otherwise you'd get negative MPG readings!

At tickover (with the car stationary) it's actually doing zero MPG - because it consuming fuel but not going anywhere.

What does it read at steady speeds of 40, 50 and 60 MPH in 5th gear?

On the 480, when stationary, it goes to 3 lines --.-, then once you are moving it starts again. that's why it so silly, when driving well, eg, coasting etc, it is 11.1, then the harder you drive the car, the better the figures. It is an Automatic.

Look to me as the computer is not calibrated in MPG but in liter per 100Km ....

Mine (1999 S70 T5) as such a setting, when I'm gentle I get ~10 ~11 liters /

100Km, when a realy floor it I get 50 liter / 100Km (50 seem to be the maximum the computer can handle ) and this is exactly what you're reading.

Bottom line, your Fiancée is right.

That would certainly explain it - because it is then reporting fuel used per unit of distance travelled rather than distance travelled per unit of fuel used. In this case, the harder you drive, the higher the number - and the bigger your fuel bill!

You sure that you aren't seeing the instantaneous consumption in Litres per

100 Km (Gall per 100 mile?).
