Volvo Fuel Caps

I just learned something interesting while having my bi-yearly emissions test. Now they test the vehicle's fuel cap for leakage of fumes (hydrocarbons).

Naturally, my '95 940 failed this test. I was obliged to purchase a new after-market cap while they threw the old one away. They told me that Volvos in particular, even the newer ones have a problem with the OEM caps. They said that they seem to be very fragile, and once you drop it, you break something inside having to do with the vent system, I guess.

Has anyone heard of this? They have a special test tool that fits onto the cap that measures the leakage.

We've had that test here as part of our emissions testing since it was introduced in 1998. My cars have always passed even my 1983 and 1984

240s.
