Volvo S60 Hollow noise coming from rear end???

Sounds like parcel shelf or something similar making a hollow rattling noise over bumps - even slight ones.

Took it to the main dealer - technician and his boss took for test drive and up on ramp and said it is something that can happen inside the silencer. Car only 3 years old and silencer is excellent condition and they said choice is to live with it or have a new silencer for £500. I feel very disappointed as the noise gets on your nerves. Is it really what they say it is and can't anything be done about it.

Had a similar problem with my 01 S60 (about 58K miles) - it was rear suspension bushings.

If it is in the silencer (muffler in 'merican) you should be able to reproduce the rattle why grabbing and giving it a good shake. Unfortunately if this is the problem Volvo will probable not be helpful about fixing it at their cost. Obviously a muffler which fails in 3 years is poorly made, but often Volvo's attitude seems to be Tough Luck.

Hmmm, wonder why I have been buying Honda/Acura products lately ?

rear suspension bushings on my 2001 S60 were replaced at about 30k miles.
