what special tools do I need to perform oil change on 2004 xc70?

I'd like to start doing my own oil changes but it's my understanding that I might need a special tool to remove the oil filter? Is it not recommended to change your own oil on a Volvo? Also where can I purchase these tools online? Thanks

I suppose it might be worth mentioning that if it's anything like my V40, there will be a bit (couple of eggcups full?) of excess oil released when the filter cap is removed, which has an uncanny habit of dribbling up my arm to stain my shirt.

anyone know of any tricks to mitigate the damage?

Also do I need to use any special filter brand or oil? What's the standard used by Volvo owners?

Tricks spin off very quickly Use a Filter made by Mann this is who Volvo uses also change the drain plug gasket

I use a wide and shallow drain vessel, and it all goes where it's supposed to nowadays - it was just the first couple of times.

As for oil, I'm in the UK and know nothing about brands/grades of oil available elsewhere, and I've no experience of what any other Volvo models use, if different, so I say nothing.

I've used both volvo and aftermarket filters in my 360 glt it takes a lot longer to put the light out with the aftermarket ones which are no cheaper than the genuine part anyway Garth

My '98 V40 is very low mileage (130k), and the light goes out very quickly with either, but I heard somewhere that one of the aftermarket people make the things for Volvo so it is the same thing I might be fitting, but with a different label. I have also been surprised at the relatively painless price of some genuine service parts. And also, I must say that the parts dept at the nearest dealership are very approachable and friendly towards the private customer.

My 360 is approaching 300,000 miles on its original engine so bound to be getting a bit tired Like you I've found genuine parts prices to be very reasonable in fact it cost $5.00 more for the aftermarket oil filter Garth
