Is there now a larger oil filter for the 1.8T engine ?
yes
YES!
VW put out a bulletin last year requiring a larger filter and the use of certain VW 502 spec approved oils on a 5K OCI to keep their 80K "sludge warranty" in effect. The larger filter increases the oil capacity from a paltry 3.7 quarts to about 4.3 quarts. The larger filters are Mann 940/25, Mahle OC 51, Beck/Arnley 042-8139, AC Delco PF-96, Bosch 72174, Fram PH3569. Commonly available VW 502 approved oils (in the USA, anyways) are Castrol Syntec and Valvoline Synpower 5w40 and Mobil1 0w40, all synthetic oils.
Another alternative filter is the diesel engine Mann 950/4 and its equivalents, which increases capacity of the longitudinal 1.8T to almost 5 quarts, almost the same as the transversely-mounted versions of this engine that are not prone to "sludging."
