1.8T Oil - Warranty

For the past 1 1/2 months, I've been pestering the dealer in question to prove that the oil it used met VW 502.00. You would think it was a slam dunk to do so if the oil is in fact OK. I mean, you would think that the dealer had to use something for guidance on putting the right oil in the car and not just guess! After saying for the past 1 1/2 months that it was going to get proof from Mobil, the dealer finally gave up on that. I think he called VW and was told to put in an approved Mobil 1.

The dealer changed out the oil this Saturday at no cost. He only had Mobil 1 0-40 on hand. I would have preferred 5-40 since I live in a hot climate.

I checked my ticket for the oil change that caused my inquiry in the

1st place. All it shows for the oil is 6 qts 98HR05 Mobil 5W30. I didn't find anything on google or yahoo with this part number. Maybe it's a number for an approved oil, but I couldn't find anything on the web and the dealer couldn't come up with anything either.

The ticket for Saturday's oil change shows 6 qts. 98BB04 MBL1 - SYN

0W40.

I'm not happy that oil was originally put in that might not meed VW

502.00, but I will give the dealer credit for finally doing the right thing. I don't know, however, that I'll go back to him for oil changes. The only thing that was bringing me to the dealer was the fact that they have the filter, etc. on hand and neither I nor a local garage has to chase across town to get it. I'll have to give this further thought for the future.

BTW, thanks to the poster who provided the Tech Bulletin for VW 502.00 from 2006.

6 quarts. I thought that engine took less than 5 even with the big oil filter.

Very interesting, but not worth the hassle for going back to the dealer about it.

The "wrong" oil that was put in first cost something like $2.50/qt. Mobil1 costs $4.++/qt., but I didn't pay for Saturday's oil change.

I'll need to keep an eye on this when I go for the next oil change.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Stop by your dealer and ask them to let you read technical bulletin 17-08-01 dated 1/08/08 which has a list of VW approved oils. As a reference Mobil 1 has the 502-00 spec. for SAE 0W-40

My GF stumbled across VW's letter the other day, and was good enough to type of the list of oils:

Here's a list you might find useful: AMSOIL Synthetic European Car Formula is formulated to surpass the most demanding European specifications. It is recommended for European and North American gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following worldwide specifications:

  • API SM/CF * ACEA C3-04 * ACEA A3/B3-04 * ACEA A3/B4-04 * ACEA C3 * BMW LL-04 * Mercedes Benz 229.31, 229.51 * Porsche * Saab * Volvo * Volkswagen 502.00, 505.00, 505.01 * DaimlerChrysler MS-10725

Your Owners Manual should show what criteria must be met to qualify. I sure don't have look far to find the brand that has the necessary qualities.

Oil change interval of 5,000 miles or 6 months is likely be too long for any non-synthetic but oil analysis would prove it one way or the other. VW will have what the extneded OCI is.
