1980 VW diesel Rabbit

Recently, I purchased a 1980 VW diesel rabbit to burn biodiesel. Although, I'm having problems with the left rear turn signal. For the first few days everything worked correctly, but now when I flip on the left turn signal and apply the brake the turn signal indicator on the dash flickers on and off and emits a snapping sound. But the signal works fine up until I press the brake peddle.

I checked the bulbs for any that might have been burned out, but didn't find anything. All the bulbs light up with the corresponding action correctly (i.e. turn signal - turn signal lamp, running light - running light lamp). Not sure about the brake light, as I haven't had anyone around to check while I depress the peddle. I was wondering if maybe some of the wiring may have been switched around at the lamp connections, but I just haven't had time to play around with it.

If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, david

Try replacing the rear lamps. While they may both seem to work, one may be defective having an internal short and could cause the problem you are observing.

Pedal :) and that's where you should start (brake lamps).

When you have the signal on and the pedal pressed (have a helper do this) look at the lights outside. I bet on one or more of your taillamp clusters you're getting a weird light show. I bet you have an open ground causing the lamps to ground themselves through other lamps. that works fine when only one lamp is on but when two lamps are on, that's when things go awry.

Check your ground connections at the rear lamps. From each lamp cluster there should be one or more wires grounding to the body or chassis. Check this connection and make sure it's secure, tight, clean, and free of corrosion.
