1992 GTI Tail lights stay on.

I'm having a very annoying problem with my tail lights, for some reason they seem to stay on almost like i,m constantly braking. The funny thing is they get a little brighter when i do actually brake. I have checked the brake switch located near the brake pedal and it seems to work fine. My fuses all work properly. The brake lights do stay on though even when the fuse was taken out so that might be an indication of something.

Anyway if someone knows what my problem is that would be great.

Thanks.

Did you recently replace a bulb anywhere? I'm thinking the bulb(s) is installed incorrectly.

Do they go out when you turn off the ignition?

Do they go out when you put on the parking brake?

ok what could cause the '92 GTi (hatchback) to have the taillights come on without the brake light switch connected and without the lightswitch on. That is a puzzler unless there are some wiring issues. Maybe faulty headlight switch and incorrect taillight bulbs.

If the light switch was on, I would check all bulbs in the taillight housings to make sure that the correct bulbs were correctly installed. Check all ground wiring at the housing to make sure that it is grounded well. I sometimes add an additional ground to each taillight housing. It could also be wiring problems right at the hatch where the wires bend back and forth.

good luck, dave (>

Maybe it's normal for the tail lights to be on when the ignition is on.

AFAIK.......that is not normal for the '92 GTi

Unless it's a Canadian model and has DRLs in which case all the lights are on in such a situation (almost identical to having the low beams on).
