1994 Jetta auto transaxle issues

Installed new transaxle, marked "CFH", had different type of CV axles. The trans computer didn't match. It went into a limp-home mode, 1 = 1st gear, 2 = 2nd gear, 3 = 3rd gear and D = 3rd gear. If only D went into

4th I'd love it, my own kind of Tiptronic. But because is stuck in 3rd, my top speed is only about 90 miles per hour at 6000 rpm! In my Saab Turbo I routinely cruise around 95-105 miles per hour and it's not nearly as noisy, or burning as much fuel. But this is only a small car not built for that kind of thing anyway.

I also had some engagement problems. If say I came to a stop, or slow speed, then accelerated (like you would at a stop sign), the trans would slip, r/min increases then BANG launches forward. Kindof like an inexperienced driver driving a manual for the first time. If you decelerate, then wait a small period of time before getting on the gas, no problem. Happens in 1st 2nd and probably 3rd (i'd always downshift for that situation).

So, now I am installing a new transaxle unit. I do need the CV shafts for it, trans is from 95 Jetta 2.0 litre if anyone has a pair sitting in the garage collecting dust.

However am wondering if the "failsafe" due to the TCM mismatch is what is causing the issues?

did you read any DTCs? I suspect wiring issue or sensor problem like Vehicle Speed Sensor.
