2000 Passat 1.8 Turbo hesitation

Car: 2001 Passat 1.8T engine with 50K miles Problem: Hesistation on acceleration, usually around 2000 rpm in 1-2-3 gears

Doesn't happen more/less when cold. Didn't happen during first few years, only really noticed it last year.

In searching this newsgroup I find others with the same problem but many different ideas on the cause. Has a consensus developed?

Possible causes:

-Injectors bad/clogged

-fuel filter clogged

-O2 sensor failing

-vacuum leak

-failing diverter valve

-turbo overrun cutoff valve

What is the best solution at this point? I'm sure the local mechanics (including VW dealer) would be clueless.

Could this be related to mass air flow sensor problems that were recalled?

Any speculation/advice appreciated.

The MAF's, at least on the diesels were affected at all times, tho one person I worked with said his only had problems after driving for like 2 hours, then it would lose power, badly (that car also had a clogged EGR valve, which may have been the problem... as the MAF did develop into an all the time problem after a while).

Hey, I didn't say that all mechanics everywhere are clueless, or that all vw dealer mechanics are clueless.

I already took it to my local VW dealer last year and they had no idea, or at least acted like they had no idea. Their advice was "Wait till it gets worse and then bring it in again."

I would be happy to hear your opinion because if this is so common then the VW mechanics should have seen this a bunch and narrowed down the possibilities.

I live in a small town with very few VW's, and I'm just reporting my experience.

Dont be so offended Woodchuck. There is obviously good dealer techs and clueless dealer techs. It took my VW dealer 3 appointments and $2000 worth of labor and parts guessing replacements to finally fix my Passat.

Hi woodchuck, I bought the Repair Manual for my 2001 Jetta and located the horn and headlight alarm fuses,on top of the relay panel, and removed them. Now, I can sleep peacefully at night.

By the way the micro switches are Normally Open; held closed when the hood or trunk lids close. So unplugging them gives a secure condition. Thanks here.

My MIL check light came on for a long time, took the car to the place I bought it. But they only unplugged the battery for a while to reset the CPU, but it came back on the next day. Later, I added a can of SLICK 50 and a full tank of gas, and the light went out. This might be the cheapest thing to try first, Jeff.

Are you hearing a hiccup when you shift or otherwise lift off the throttle? If so, the air bypass valve is bad and can cause hesitation. Get the Audi TT replacement, about $40. Texas Parts Guy

Nope, no hiccups or anything audible. The acceleration is not smooth as it used to be. I have been adding injector cleaner, but is that really the only thing that could be causing this? It just seems like a very common problem but perhaps no unique solution.
