2000 VW Bug check engine light.

My Yellow Check Engine light has just recently come on. Are there any basic things I can do/change before I take the car to the dealer to rip me off ?

Many Thanks.

Yes, send me all your money first so the dealer can't rip you off! If it's not flashing then it should be OK to drive and may go off within the week if issue was minor.

Check if your fuel cap is closed tightly.

Oh that is such a common problem along with a missing gas cap or just a bad vacuum hose! Reading the codes help not to guess! ;-)

Hmmm which is worse getting ripped off or allowing yourself to get ripped off?

You could purchase some tools so you can read the Check Engine light yourself. Or possibly take it to some auto parts stores, or repair places, that will read the codes for free. Or find someone with the vag-com tool (ross-tech.com) in your area that might read your codes cheaply or free.
