2001 VW Bug check engine light and now cant find reverse ! (Standard)

4 days ago my check engine light came on and now last night I am having some serious gear changing issues. Whenever I try to find reverse its not even there. Also the position of each gear is very loose, and I can't find 1st. I am thinking that this issue is separate from the light and that the clutch might need replacing.

Any thoughts ??

Most likely the check engine light is not related to the loose shifter. I doubt the problem is your clutch but rather a failure in the shifting linkages. A good inspection will most likely show something worn or broken. Seems i heard of a bracket coming loose causing these symptoms.
