2002 Jetta

I have a 2002 Jetta and I have it in the shop right now. I wanted to know if anyone else had this problem before. Now yesterday as I was driving home almost there the temp gauge shot up and the temp light came on like it was overheating. Well today I took it into the repair shop and they replaced the thermostat on it. He said that the engine light and the temp gauge still goes up and seems like there is no water running thru it. Where is the waterpump located on them? I have no idea whats going on with it. I dont think they really know what they are doing. I am really hating it now that I took it to this place. The temp of the coolant and hoses are now more where they should be. Also there was something that was dripping from the under the bumper. I couldn't tell the color of it but it was slick like and kind of smelled oily. Also yesterday there was white smoke coming from the tail pipes. Any idea whats going on?

White smoke means the engine is burning radiator coolant. Either through a blown head gasket or a hole/crack somewhere in the engine block.

Did you continue to drive the car overheated? Doing so creates serious irreversible damage to the engines major internal components. In which case and engine rebuild might be in order.

Any time the temperature is too high or the oil pressure too low it's always best to shut the engine off ASAP even before stoping the car. This can be down by turning the key just ONE notch so that the steering wheel will not lock up. The car placed in Neutral and coasted to a stop. Using the e-brake/parking brake might be necessary.

Thankfully I was pulling right up to the apartment complex when it started to overheat. I live in the very first building. I did drive it the next day to the repair shop. It was a cold day so I think it helped because it didn't overheat. The shop replaced the thermostat because he tested temps of the coolant and hoses and there were where they should be or cooler. Well, he took one of the hoses off but there was nothing pumping. Well, turns out that it was the waterpump. I never heard of this but the propeller on the pump is plastic and turns out it was broken into 3 pieces. A nice $561 down the drain. Thank god I already got my tax refund.

Sounds like you got "hosed" on the repair price. VW OEM water pump lists for around $70 in my area and 3hours labor, and just under $20 for coolant. At $80 per hour that only $330 at OUR DEALER! And we wouldn't of made a guess by trying the thermostat first

Yea but they also put a new thermostat on. That was $150 just do that. That was the first thing that he did because that is what seemed to the problem. However that was not the case.
