2003 Jetta..Real Weird one....

Just had the rear tires replaced on my 2003 Jetta GL (Dunlop same size as the stock Mich) and now I am getting a real weird "creaking noise" when comming to a stop, forward or backward. It almost sounds like a bad exhaust system rubber mount, but it's not. Bouncing the car produces no creak neither does cornering hard. It happens EXACTLY at the point where the car comes to a complete stop.

One other thing, I had changed the rear brake pads about 2 weeks prior to the new tires, but they were fine no creak/squeal/etc with the old tires on the car. Bendix pads and I used the tool to turn/press the caliper etc.

The noise started right after the tire replacement and seems to be related to the tire/rim and not the pads.

Before I lift the car, any ideas? I'm wondering about lug nut torque or maybe they disturbed something when they lifted the car with the floor jack. It's a good independent tire shop and he has done tires on this car, as well as my other cars, before with no troubles.

So waddya think?

We have an update!!!

It DOES creak/groan just bouncing the car. It didn't the first time I did it, but it does now. Sounds like either spring creak or the exhaust system/hanger.

What's typical on these beasts for this problem?

TIA!!

I don't know what's "typical." I can relate that a friend had a similar job done on a car with struts (not a VW) and got a creaking/squeaking noise after it was done. The upshot of the whole thing was that lifting the car to do the tires had apparently unseated a somewhat worn bushing at the top of the strut. You could see a very small bit of clean rubber showing where it had formerly been covered by the strut. The mechanic speculated that so long as the car was pressing on it, it just wore in that way and was quiet. When they lifted it, and the wheel and suspension was hanging rather than pressing on the bushing, it shifted just a bit and started making noises. He said he could replace it, but that it would probably just wear in again without doing anything. The noise went away after a month or so.

New tires can make noise rolling.

Thanks Bill and the others, I think that's exactly what it is. My daughter failed to inform me that she had an inspection done the day after the new tires and they lifted the car up on a rack so the wheels were hanging.

I think you are right on the money!

I'm gonna put it up on the ramps this week and take a look around but I don't think it is anything serious. Just annoying!

Thanks again!
