2003 Jetta TDI - How to stop carbon build-up?

I drive more city miles than highway. As a matter of fact I only have about 13500 miles on my 2003. So, I have already had problems with the build-up. Is there any additvie or "thing" that can cut this down?

Why do you feel you have had carbon build up?

best thing to do is take it out every week or so on the highway wait till its warm then hold the revs high for a while,if its an auto u may wanna downshift a gear, keep the revs no higher than 5k but above 3500, most volkswagon engines are screamers and work better when they r reved higher

The TDIs are diesels and I would guess that running them at high RPMs is more likely to cause build up.

Move out of the US because we have crappy fuel here! You may also want to check with your dealers rep and ask him which fuels cause the least carbon issues. Also keep using the VW TDI oil which helps alot.

Because my car has been diabled and put in the shop twice because of what I was told by VW was build up. It is the deal where the car won't start, you open the hood and push a spring "thing" and it snaps back into place and then the car will start. (I think it is called a shut off valve)

I don't know what they used to clean it but my car smelled STRONG for quite a while after. I was just trying to find out if I can prevent this by actively doing something. Maybe at fill-up.

So, when the clean diesel is brought in this will go way down? I can handle that. I do take it in to VW for oil changes.

I am on the highway at least once a week. I will try this.

I'm told it's the sulfur in our present fuels which cause the problem. When it's gone the TDI should be less prone to the carbon issues. And... it will give the oil companies another excuse to raise the price!

Yes, like the greedy bastards need one.

There's also a re-program of the ECU you can do to limit the use of the EGR valve.

So, the car would shake a little bit more when you shut it off but always start?
