40,000 Mile Service

My 2001 Jetta VR6 is quickly approaching 40,000 miles (39,110). I called the dealer today to see how much the 40,000 mile service is. They quoted me a price of $475.00. I looked in my owners manual to see exactly what this service consisted of and this price seems kind of high. Is this how much they're charging everywhere?

I just had the stealer service my wife's '99 Cabrio with 40,xxx on the clock. I got the service for $399 plus extra for two belts and a vacuum leak. Total bill was $550, with the rear brakes still needing pads. I imagine the VR6 is a little higher, but $75? It's up to you.

Try calling around, even to dealerships that are out of your area, that'll give you a baseline at least. Other non-dealer garages can do the work as well, as long as you trust them.

$389 at our dealer in PA!

I think it was just under $400 for my 2000 Passat V6 at 40K. It doubled because it needed rear pads and rotors. Just looked it up. $796 including the brakes and the 40K service and a couple of very minor other things.

They do more on the 40K than many other services, at least on ours. I called around and all the dealers were about the same, a couple actually higher.

Thanks a lot everyone for your responses. I still think this price is kinda high. I will call around though. Thanks again.

Keep in mind that you are not required to have a VW dealership perform this service. Any qualified independent mechanic can do it, too, with no risk to the car's warranty. Just have them itemize everything they do, according to the list in the manual.

Very true, but a qualified technician can see potential problems that a owner usually can't.

Question to self: How much is my time, experiance and knowledge worth?

I hope to hell that your TDI breaks down, in your driveway, and your only source of information is this newsgroup, where several techs hang around. Don't make broad, rash generalizations.

I wish you were a customer of mine as I would quickly change your opinion. As for your tires if the tech didn't rotate them then he should be fired. But on the other hand say if the front tires had 8/32 thread and the rears were 6/32 thread. If your car was on my rack I would demand the service advisor ask if you still wanted the tires rotated.

Yes there are a lot of VW techs that do poor quality work but I think there are many more who care about the car and customer as I do. While it does happen I have screwed up a job but have the "balls" to admit to the owner that I did screw up. After all we are all human. Just look at a baseball hero who has a batting average of 250.... well that means 25% of the time he hits the ball and 75% of the time he misses the ball. And he still gets paid millions of $$$$. Can you imagine if your auto tech did this in only fixing

1 out of 4 cars during the day! and to sum things up even in our shop there are younger techs that I would no want to help me on a job because the only way I know it's done to my standards is doing it ALL myself.

Thanks for the space.

What people fail to realize is that there are millions of mechanics in this country. Even if only a small percentage of them are less than fully competent that means the numbers of them are quite large. Don't label all mechanics just because you know of horror stories that have happened to yourself and your friends. There are some good ones. Unfortunately, the specialized ones always realize they can make more money on their own than working for a dealership so the dealers can't hold them forever. This is true for probably all makes.

On the other hand... I do have a problem with a bunch of 10 second inspections and otherwise cheap service being packaged together and then doubled in price, which is quite common when you ask them to do x-thousand mile maintenance.
