Pick up a Bentley "Volkswagen Service Manual" (written by Robert Bentley). They're the best manuals available, and can be found at most Volkswagen parts dealers (and probably many bookstores). You would want the red "Rabbit/Scirroco 1975 through 1979" manual, ISBN # 0-8376-0107-X

The Bentley manual say's it's located under the rear seat on fuel injected models (which the 78 should be). So, you'll need to remove the rear seat and remove the cover plate to gain access to the sender.

Good luck,

Anthony

As far as repair manuals are concerned, there is nothing better than the Bentley manuals. Bentley published many different manuals, each specific to a particular car or group of cars. So make sure you get the right one. I believe they are priced around $50, but you can probably get one at lower costs if you shop around.

i just ordered a used copy of the exact bentley manual mentioned and the fuel level sending unit was right where you said. just a bit further up the car than my lazy self had looked

unfortunately, still no fuel gauge still not working, but i'll wait till the manual gets here and find out which wires to check

thanks
