85 Jetta coolant leak

I can see coolant seeping out from around a metal pipe outlet with a sort of flange bolted to the front of the engine below the number one cylinder. There's a foot-long s-shaped hose about 1 inch in diameter that connects up into the main radiator hose. The flange is held to the block with a M8 bolt (at least it has a 13 MM head), and is behind the air conditioning compressor. It'll require removing the alternator and taking the compressor loose to get in there to back out that bolt.

The question is, do I need a gasket or an o-ring, and will I need to replace the metal pipe flange thingy?

The Jetta is a GL, with the 1.8 L GX gas engine. Auto tranny. 250 K miles.

I need to get all the parts together to do the whole fix, as I have use of a garage with tools, etc. after 5:30 Friday nights when the parts stores are all closed. I need to get a list of the VW part numbers for this whole subassembly. Can anyone share a blow-up diagram?

TIA,

Pat

Your description refers to the water-pump housing and there is indeed an o-ring below it.

Water Pump Housing? similar to this

I suspect the water pump is bad. If you wish to change it and you have rust or corrosion in your area then purchase a NEW water pump with it's housing. Sometimes the little bolts holding the water pump to the housing will break off if you are not careful. I usually use a torch to get them out and then retap the holes and use Anti-Seize on the cleaned bolt threads. Those little hoses might be good to change too along with the thermostat since it is easier to do. :-) YES the A/C bracket and P/S bracket will need to be removed.

If you search you might be able to find better prices..................so shop around. ;-)

AND repair manuals help too!
