91 Golf exhaust leak & engine power

I went to get my car inspected a few days ago and it failed because of an exhaust leak (funny, it's passed the last 3 years without a problem). it is caused from the junction of two pipes between the cat and resonator. one fits over the other which allows plenty of exhaust to simply blow around. I thought I'd try a quick fix and put some "exhaust fix" gel up there that hardened and later broke leaving some leak remaining. After I did this however, it feels like my engine idles a bit rougher and i don't feel like I have as much power. I am planning on taking my car to a muffler shop and have them weld it so it will pass inspection, but I don't want this rougher idle to continue.

I am wondering if I should redo the quick fix seal, get it inspected immediately and break it back off to return it to its previous (exhaust leak) state?

thanks,

It is always nice to have those deadly gasses going out of the rear of the Golf instead of near the doors. Cough Cough.

I vote you either clamp it down or have it welded up so the exhaust fumes stay away from you.

Now if the exhaust is sealed properly and it is not clogged then you might have other issues that you need to address. When finished you will probably have more power and better fuel mileage. ;-) The mufflers can clog up if the catalytic converter breaks up and its guts go into the muffler clogging it.

yeah it sounds like the pipe connection is just missing a clamp...two pipes that fit one inside the other should at the very least be clamped together.
