'95 golf diesel clutch on the fritz????

When engine running, I can't get the car into any gear - just too much resistance. When engine off, I can cycle through the gears with no prob, but getting to work is excrutiatingly slow ;) Am I looking at a new clutch or is the auto adjusting cable suspect?!?!

Thanks for your insight

probable the small finger that moves the release bearing is broken. easy fix. dealer charged me less that US$100 to fix. Part alone should be US$30

That is not the lever on the outside that the cable is attached to is it? If that is the case then that is not my problem. I will study it further

there is a green cap on the side of the transmission. you have to break it to get it out. inside you'll find the rest of the arm the cable attaches to. On that arm there's a small metal finger that pushes the release bearing as it rotates. It usually breaks....

I just replace the 5th gear cover which, on the A2's at least, has everything you need. If the finger is broken, the break may not be visible. No matter which route you take, drain the fluid first!

After making arrangements with my mechanic I started it up and the prob has cleared itself. He figures something about the clutch return plate had a broken spring which is now in the bottom of the bell housing.
