96 Jetta III Odometer "------" or "Error"

Sudden electrical issues including jumping gauges, flashing lights, muted horn, and wouldn't start. (alarm?) Seems to be resolved with a new battery, however the odometer now reads "------" and "Error". Clock, speedo, tach all functioning fine.

Local VW techs are recommending a new cluster.

Got in to the codes:

1 6210 2 3 - 32,??? 4 5 - 6 7 - digital tach (pretty cool) 8 - 3.1 Trip

Any way to solve the error and get the odometer back?

Thanks.

Disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes and then see what happens.

And if this doesn't help, then you are pretty much in trouble.

"Error" in the odometer window usually means, that eeprom of the instrument cluster is somehow corrupted, which can easily happen, if battery voltage is not stable enough.

Of course, this doesn't mean, that this cluster damaged beyond repair. Eeprom can be flashed again, provided you have correct binary image and know how to do it :)

Another possibility is to try to find some used cluster from a wrecked car.
