97 jetta overheating

i have a 97 jetta overheating. I?ve replaced the themostat but the temp when standing still gets to 230...is that norm?

It could be many things. First would be to check to see if it is really getting that hot or if it is a measurement error. The sensor or gauge could be bad.

Have you burped the cooling system since you opened it? On the 2.0l's anyway (you didn't say what engine), if you don't squeeze the upper hoses to get most of the air out, it doesn't cool worth a hoot. Even at that, I've carried a premixed bottle of coolant with me as "make up" for when the rest of the air finds it's way out. Take's about a week total.
