97' VR6 Manual Transmission needed?

Hi, Does anyone know where I can find a transmission for this car? The trans comes out of 5th, and makes a sad sound in neutral. sound stops if you press in the clutch.....

TIA

hmmm I would have thought that USUALLY the throw out bearing would make more noise when you do press in the clutch and would quiet down when the pedal is released. Although the transmission mainshaft might stop spinning when the pedal is pushed in (and in one of the gears) thus elimating any possibility of the noise coming from the transmission if the vehicle is not moving also.

Can these 5th gear(s) be serviced with the trans still in the vehicle?

Nope. They rattle louder when released.

I've never done it but I have heard you can. Besides I would try checking the fluid level first before opening it up.

I just changed the clutch in a 97 Golf VR6 and I noticed that the clutch disc still had some material left, but the pressure plate lost holding pressure. Strange, I had expected to see the material exploded off of the clutch disc!!! Part of the linkage at the trans had broken and the lowest gear selectable was

3rd so this might have caused the clutch problem. I heard no noises coming from the old release bearing, but it seemed like, in this poster's case, IF the bearing was rattling with the clutch pedal out, it would still make noise with the clutch pedal pushed in.

I guess a lot of things are possible. ;-)

I'll look in the Bentley for trans information, but if it is making noise.......maybe a new unit is in order. Good luck with your search for a VR6 trans. If you email me I might give you a source that might find you a new/remanned/used one. It is a 1-800 number, but they are in the US and I think you are in Canada and they should be able to ship a unit to you.

My correct email address is easy to figure out! :-)
