A3 Golf clutch cable reconnect

Hi, The small clip that the clutch cable attaches to (on the gearbox end in the engine bay) broke. I have bought a new clip, but in trying to reattached the cable, the cable seems to be about 3cm (1 inch) too short to reach the clip where it meets the clutch / gearbox housing. This is after compressing the shelf adjusting part to it's maximum. Have I missed something? The lever that comes of the gearbox housing housing that the cable attachs to is at it's highest, the self adjuster is as compressed as it's gonna get and I'm short 3cm, even though it's the same cable & everything else is identical. Does it matter whether the car is in gear or neutral? Will this influence how high the lever can go? Is there some cable adjustment elsewhere to make the cable longer? thanks in advance Bryan.

There is an adjustment mechanism on the cable that will need to be loosened in order for the cable to reach.

Tricky to loosen that adjustment mechanism to "reset" the clutch cable. You have to push in the cable a little, then pull out the cable while tring to push the housing in at the same time. It can be frustrating but if you keep at it, it might reset. I have taken apart one, something that they say you shouldn't do, and reset one that way too.

There is also a retainer that keeps the cable in its install position. I sometimes have to use some stiff wire to keep the housing shortened in its install position. Picture of new cable here on ebay # 310070729180 You can also install a manually adjustable cable too! ;-)

Probably does not make sense! :-)
