Advice for plans for Golf MK2 rebuild

Hi

I own a Golf MK2 Cl (1.3l) 1992 with 275,000km on the clock. I now have a 2nd car, so I'd like to start rebuilding the Golf.

I'm planning on replacing/fixing the engine. The first decision I need to get out of the way is: carburetors or fuel injection? The car currently has carburetors. I have often read that a carburetor to fuel injection conversion is difficult. What is actually involved here? If a buy a fuel injected engine, what else will I need? I know I'll need the following:

  • timing computer
  • petrol pump but I'm not sure about:
  • petrol tank
  • lambda probe.

The car currently has a 4 speed gearbox. If I get a 5 speed, will I need to change the linkage and the gate?

I've got a load of other questions, but these are the ones that are bothering me the most. If anyone knows of a resource that can help me with such a project, I'd be really grateful if you'd let me know about it.

Thanks, Gary

Sorry - I just need to correct some I said. I got a friend to proof read my post, and I did not notice that he had changed that line.

The 1st line of the 2nd paragraph should read "I'm planning on putting in a new/rebuilt engine."

Difficult only means it takes more time. ;)

It depends on the fuel injection you are going to use. Earlier (up to around 91 or so, at least here in the US) VWs used CIS fuel injection, which is quite simple to use and adjust. Later went to something that looks like modern fuel injection (first digifant then motronic). Some CIS systems do not use lambda probe.

Other items you will need regardless:

o The fuel injectors themselves o The intake manifold with all the crap that is attached to it (throttle plate, idle control valve, hose from throttle valve to air filter, etc) o The wiring from the Fuel Injected donor car. That includes all fuses and relays o Fuel lines o New seals as needed o FI exhaust manifold if you are going to use the lambda probe

Honeslty, I do not know. Only one way to find out, right? ;)

Where are you at? I do know the British Haynes books cover both carburated and FI VWs... at least my Scirocco II one does. Myabe it will give you an idea of which parts you will need and how they go in the car. Which engine size (1.8L, 1.1L, etc) are you going to put in the car?

The change from CIS to Digifant took place on late 1987 models in the US and Canada. Digifant was then used on all remaining A2s after that here except for 16V models which used CIS-E if 1.8, Motronic if 2.0.

Thanks for all the info. I don't know exactly what size I'm going to put in, but probaly a 1,6L or 1,8L. I'm busy looking around for moters at scrap yards.

(throttle plate, idle control valve, hose from throttle valve to air filter, etc)

I was assuming that the fuel injected moters that I have looked at had these, but now I'm not so sure. - Thanks again for the information.
