BIG static 99 Jetta Radio

This is weird. Here's what happens, in the best way I can describe it.

All pertains to the stock radio/tape unit that came with the car.

I play tape. Hit the stop button and the unit automaticaly goes to the last radio station I was listening to. I shut down power to the system, shut off the car.

The next time I start the car and then turn on the radio I get a huge electronic "bang" - for lack of a better term.

Its like some has applied power to some electronic amplifer with the speakers turned up on bust.

It is an intermittent problem but driving me nutso.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Veedub... Its is a purely stock system. The radio came with the

  1. Its a TDI A4 style Jetta. So we're talking the radio, tape player combo. It bears the VW trade mark but I suspect it was made by some other factory.

If I have to check the ground, how in the world do I get access to the system ? I know there have been many threads re removing the radio. Maybe I'll give that a try just to look atg the wiring.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
