Chirping noise from front brakes/2000 Golf

2 months ago I posted about a oud chirping noise that happened occasionally on my 2000 Golf. It stopped when I touched the brake, turned hard, or backed up; but then started up again; until it simply went away until next time.

Since then it has happened maybe twice, for about 3 or 4 minutes each time. I have driven about 2,000 miles in that time; so it is pretty infrequent, but I have never hear a loud noise like that before, and it is disconcerting.

I am getting an oil change next week, so I want to have the chirping noise fixed. When I asked before, several people said it was worn pads or rotors. One person said it was pins the front caliper rides on needed a little bit of brake grease.

Given the infreqent nature of the noise, does the worn pad or pins make more sense? Or something else?

I think it is as others have already said, worn pads. The chirping noise is designed into the pads so that you hear the noise when the pads begin to get dangerously thin.

But it doesn't chirp when I use the brakes; only when I am NOT using the brakes. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

Yes, you should only hear it when the brakes are applied. Nevertheless, now is not the time to speculate. Get it checked out to be safe.
