DIY Replacing Window regulator

Hello,

I am trying to replace the window regualtor on my 98 GTI VR6.I managed to removed the door panel however i am not sure how to lower the window ( electric) so i can remove the regulator. Bently manual shows the instruction on the hand crank version only not the electric. The window is stuck all the way up. The other thing how would you know if the problem is from the motor or the regulator?

Thanks in advance

If you could you disconnect the motor from the controller then it's easy. Apply power to it with reverse polarity.

Disconnect the motor and see if it works. AFAIK The regulator, or it's clips, usually breaks and the window falls down.

And a lot of times the wires between the door and the post seem to crack and break.

Thanks for the link it gave me an idea but mine is a 98 gti it's the MK3 and the door layout looks different. What confuses me in the Bentley manual is when they say to lower the glass window all the way down but they don't tell you how to lower it if its an electric window. I am trying to be sure footed when i take the door apart. Any ideas or tips if you have done this before would be appreciated.

Try this link then to see if it looks like yours!

(possibly 1993-1999 early?) I disagree with the ripping of the inside plastic! Try to save it or install new plastic making sure it is sealed well at the bottom at least.

Did you remove all regulator bolts to see if you could lower glass enough to remove it's fastener?

Great, It looks like mine. mine is the passenger side. So it should me the same procedure. Should i buy the motor/regulator assembly or just the regulator? Thanks again

Normally the motor is fine. Most often it's either the wiring harness or the cables & plastic bits of the regulator. Check the wires carefully, especially in the door hinge area. If the alarm's been acting oddly, this is probably where the problem is.

To get the window 'loose' so you can unbolt the clamps, get between the regulator and door skin with a good pair of cutters. Tape the window up first so you don't have to buy one of those too ;) Cut the cable. The window should move freely. If not, cut the other 'side' of the cable.

I was going to 'salvage' pieces off an old regulator when I replaced my last one. There was nothing to save other than the stuff that never breaks!

I agree with Mark...........it is usually not the motor but also I usually hear the motor run when I try to raise/lower the window. You did not report that you heard the motor working.

I still suspect the wiring to the door is faulty. 8^o If you plug the window regulator/motor to the other door and it works................wiring. If you plug it in and it doesn't work.....................................................................motor.

I suggest you purchase an aftermarket kit that comes with both motor and regulator. It will look slightly different but performs well and generally costs about the same as either the regulator or motor from the dealer! ;-)

I probably have some spare used motors laying around here somewhere if you need one.

If the regulator is jammed, at least on my '95, you won't hear it spin either. I think there's a 'don't cut the kid's arm off' circuit that disables the motor when the load is too high. Just a guess tho'.

Easiest way is to grab a harness from the dealer, about $90 last I checked, plug it in bypassing the harness and see if it works. Don't bother taking the old one out, just open the door, pop off the covers and plug it in. IIRC be VERY careful not to run the window all the way down. I think the motor is on the outside of the window when it comes down.

I haven't seen this. Where can you get 'em?

There is a lot of places that sells motor +regulator. But the cheapest that i found so far is around $360 as oppose to $40 for only the regulator. Any tip on a cheaper place from previous experience?

i didn't mention this before but the passenger window used to work intermittently before it stopped completely. I didn't hear any crack or any weired noise before it stopped working. I am guessing it's the motor but i am going to change both.

I think you would hear something, even tho it was not a spinning sound.

It is your money but if it were me I'd do alot of trouble shooting before buying a motor. Odds are your problem is a broken ( open ) wire in the door hinge.

Especially since you said it was intermittent. Sounds like a busted wire to me. Mostly they break at the back doors, but the fronts break too. Just not as often :)

I'd also make sure the connector was still on well, and that there weren't any corrosion problems on the pins. We are talking about a 10 year old car here after all. Just be careful. On the back connectors at least, sometimes the side coming from the inside of the car isn't hooked to the body well, and will fall into the body. Not hard to fix, but it's an added surprise to try to avoid.
