I have a 5-speed jetta and I tried to get my car out of an icy parking space and was going from first to reverse (wheels were spinning). Now, when I turn the car ono, the engine is making a revving sound - and it makes the same sound when i switch gears or press the gas. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

You may have damaged the clutch. I did that on my first car over 40 years ago. That was the last clutch I damaged.

could be you popped a cv joint on an axle , it's hard to tell from your discription. Give us more clues if you can.

I don't think he would change gears if it was not running!!

(wheels were spinning) , i take this as now they are NOT Yes , the car runs ( the engine works ) , and it makes 'revvin' sounds when he gives it gas in all the different gears. Wouldn't you try a couple gears . I suggested what i thought would be of help. You seem to have a different adgenda.

The subject says it all : ''engine revving when I press the gas and change gears''

Broken CV joint, the car will not move. Both CV joints must be intact for a car to progress forward/backward.

So you judge a book by it's cover. Let's take a look at the message.

I have a 5-speed jetta and I tried to get my car out of an icy parking space and was going from first to reverse (wheels were spinning).

Tried indicates her attempt failed at getting the car freed. Plus the ( wheels were spinning ) indicates the wheels are not now spinning.

Now, when I turn the car ono, the engine is making a revving sound - and it makes the same sound when i switch gears or press the gas. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Notice the " or " ,, yes the car starts and runs but her attempts at trying to get the car to move in either first or reverse OR pressing the gas only results in a sound of revving.

A failed cv joint would cause these symptoms. The 'revving' noise would be the seperated joint hitting each other. Even in neutral in fairly cold weather. She does NOT say anything about her car moving now. She does NOT say anything about smelling anything burning.

I gave an opinion , which may differ from yours. What 's the big deal? I didn't attach my post to yours till after your attack and find it very funny others only do post when they "think" they can make somebody look wrong. I stand by my opinion that the OP has a failed cv joint. We may never know as it seems something has caused her not to respond to my asking for more clues. Gee I wonder what?

Others are making some assumptions that might be correct. But just in case....

I think that an engine is supposed to make a revving when you start the engine press on the gas.

I think when changing gears, you should let up the on the gas while you have the clutch pressed, or the engine will over-rev and make an increased sound.

Not so difficult : the OP could get out of the parking and in doing so stressed the clutch a little too much perhaps...
