Fox-Fuel and Temp Gauge

Hi there, I have a 1985 VW Fox with about 82K miles on it. Recently the Fuel gauge and the Temp gauge stopped working. Anyone have any ideas where to start looking for the culprit? They both stopped working at the same time. thanks.

If it's like all the other VWs out there the gauge console will include a

3-terminal voltage regulator that regulates the voltage to these two gauges... the Bentley manual shows where it is and how to test it. If it fails both gauges would stop working at the same time.

Early Eurovans are notorious for this although in the EV's case it's bad soldier connections on the instrument cluster board. So if it's not the voltage regulator it could be a connection.
