Gas gauge

Just wondering if all VW gas gauges are flaky as mine.

Turn the key to "ON", the gas gauge needle slowly goes up. No matter if its full or 1/4 tank. Usually takes about 10 seconds to register the actual fuel level. All the US made vehicles I've owned, same conditions, the needle literally flies to its current fuel level.

The transfer pump was changed once on the vehicle (integral with sending unit). Been through 3 dash assemblies. All the same results...

The only thing I've found that caused problems with the fuel gauge not reading properly ( other than the obivous things ) is the transistor which is used as a voltage regulator and is mounted on the back of the gauge cluster.

On mine, if the key is left in the ignition the fuel gage doesn't reset properly. I think it's even noted in the owner's manual. So every time I fill up, I make sure to take the key. If I forget, sometimes takes several tanks for the gage to recalibrate itself properly.

No idea if this applies to your situation.

Didn't say it didn't produce the proper reference on the gauge needle for the fuel in the tank. Read again. Thanks.

I have a1987 VW Cabriolet and I was wondering how much fuel I have if I'm at the orange section on the fuel gauge.
