Golf 3 - How to replace lower ball joint

Dear VW gurus, I am about to embark upon replacement of the lower ball joints on 1993 Golf 1.8, is this staightforward or are there any useful things to know in advance ? I am also fitting new shocks. TIA

It is pretty straight forward on the ball joint replacement. You might want a wheel alignment after that and the strut replacement. Make sure you tighten that knuckle clamp bolt properly. I just handled a squirrely acting one that was not clamping the ball joint to the knuckle well. It required a new bolt and nut even though the old one was tightened up well.

Remove wheel and juice up the nuts and bolts with some rust penetrant. Remove knuckle clamp through bolt and nut. Tap a fat chisel into that clamp area to spread it apart a little to allow it to widen some. Remove lower 3 bolts. (You can mark the position of the upper nut bracket.) Pull or knock out that old ball joint.

Reverse to install and torque the bolts/nuts down properly. ;-) Locktite (Blue or medium strength) is good to use too but not absolutely necessary. ;-)
